Clopay Coachman
Common Questions
The Coachman gives you the classic look of traditional wood carriage house doors without the maintenance headaches. It features a woodgrain-textured composite overlay on durable steel construction with insulation. This means you get authentic carriage-house charm without sanding, staining, warping, or rot. The composite surface mimics real wood grain, but you’ll never have to worry about the upkeep that real wood demands.
No, Coachman doors cannot be painted in dark colors. Due to Light Reflective Value (LRV) requirements, colors with an LRV of 12 or less (very dark colors like black) will void your warranty because they can cause the composite overlays to warp or delaminate. Colors with an LRV of 13-38 require approved solar reflective paint. The Coachman is available in four standard colors (White, Almond, Desert Tan, and Sandtone) or over 1,500 custom Color Blast colors that meet LRV requirements. If you want dark carriage house colors, Clopay recommends the Canyon Ridge Elements collection instead.
The Coachman offers three insulation choices: 1-3/8″ polystyrene (R-value 6.5), 2″ polystyrene (specific R-value varies), or 2″ Intellicore polyurethane (R-value up to 18.4). Intellicore is Clopay’s advanced insulation technology that expands to fill the entire door cavity, providing superior warmth, quiet operation, and energy savings. The higher R-value options help keep your garage more comfortable year-round and reduce energy costs, especially important for attached garages or homes in extreme climates.
The Coachman offers 15 distinct carriage house designs across four series, giving you plenty of style options to match your home. You can choose from solid-top sections or 10+ window styles, including rectangular, square, and arched designs with various grid patterns. Decorative hardware, such as spade, spear, or colonial lift handles and matching hinges, completes the authentic look. You can also mix overlay and base colors for a custom two-tone appearance. All window grilles are removable for easy cleaning.
The Coachman’s carriage house styling pairs beautifully with Colonial and traditional homes, complementing their timeless lines and classic exteriors. It’s also an excellent match for Craftsman-style houses, where the wood-look texture blends perfectly with handcrafted architectural details. Farmhouse and country-inspired homes benefit from their charming, rustic character, while Victorian and cottage-style properties gain historic appeal. Even modern homes with transitional design can use the Coachman to add warmth and personality without sacrificing an elegant, sophisticated feel.
