CHI Skyline Flush
Common Questions
CHI Skyline Flush features completely smooth, flat steel panels without grooves, recesses, texture, or ornamentation—pure geometric minimalism. Unlike Planks (horizontal grooves) or Raised Panel (dimensional details), Skyline Flush offers an uninterrupted surface, creating a seamless, wall-like appearance. This ultra-contemporary design is perfect for modern, mid-century modern, and minimalist architecture where simplicity and clean lines are paramount. The flush surface becomes a canvas for color, allowing bold blacks, pristine whites, or custom colors to make maximum visual impact without design distractions.
CHI Skyline Flush offers 9 solid factory colors plus 7 Accents Woodtones finishes. Solid colors include contemporary favorites: White (modern classic), Black (bold modern statement), Gray (sophisticated neutral), Sandstone/Tan, and other modern tones. Even with its smooth surface, Accents Woodtones (Natural Oak, Dark Oak, Cedar, Walnut, Driftwood, Mahogany, Carbon Oak) deliver a realistic wood-grain appearance for modern wood aesthetics. Custom powder coating in 188 colors, plus custom color matching available. The flush surface shows colors without shadows or texture changes—critical for achieving precise modern color schemes.
Window placement on Skyline Flush doors becomes a key design element given the clean canvas. Popular modern garage door configurations include: full horizontal row across top section (echoes modern ribbon windows), vertically-stacked windows along one side (contemporary asymmetry), scattered square windows in geometric patterns (architectural interest), or full-section glass panels (maximum transparency). Glass options include clear, frosted, obscure, tinted, and insulated. Window frames can be powder-coated to match or contrast with the door. The minimalist flush background makes window placement especially impactful—they become intentional design features rather than traditional accents.
CHI Skyline Flush is available in Good, Better, and Best construction levels. Good (1-layer): 24- or 25-gauge steel, non-insulated or with polystyrene backed by vinyl, R-0 to ~6.5, suitable for detached garages. Better (2-layer): 25- or 27-gauge steel with polystyrene insulation, R-values around 10-12, good for moderate climates. Best (2-sided steel): 27-gauge steel exterior and interior with polyurethane insulation between, R-values up to 17.19, premium energy efficiency, sound dampening, and structural strength—recommended for attached garages, climate-controlled spaces, and maximum performance.
Skyline Flush is designed specifically for modern and contemporary architecture and generally not recommended for traditional homes (Colonial, Victorian, Craftsman, Tudor). The stark minimalism conflicts with traditional architectural details and proportions. However, Skyline Flush can work with transitional homes—those blending modern and traditional elements—especially when using Accents Woodtones finishes to add warmth. For traditional homes, CHI’s Raised Panel, Stamped Carriage House, Stamped Shaker, or Overlay Carriage House collections provide better architectural compatibility. The choice should match your home’s overall design language: modern/contemporary = Skyline Flush; traditional = other collections.
Skyline Flush maintenance is straightforward due to the smooth surface. The completely flat panels are easier to clean than grooved or textured doors—simply wash with mild soap and water using a soft cloth or sponge. No crevices or recesses to trap dirt, debris, or moisture. The factory-applied baked-on polyester paint finish resists fading, chalking, and corrosion. Steel construction won’t rot, warp, or require refinishing like wood. However, the smooth surface may show minor dings or scratches more noticeably than textured surfaces, though the 27-gauge steel option provides excellent dent resistance.
Overall, Skyline Flush requires minimal maintenance, with occasional washing and annual lubrication of the hardware.
