Common Questions

CHI Sterling is CHI’s premium aluminum-and-glass garage door, offering modern, full-view designs with commercial-grade construction. Unlike steel doors, Sterling features extruded aluminum frames with large glass panels for maximum natural light and contemporary architectural impact. Available in 35 powder-coat colors (more than any other CHI collection), Sterling provides unmatched color customization. The aluminum construction is corrosion-resistant, lightweight yet strong, and ideal for modern, mid-century modern, and industrial-contemporary architecture.

Sterling bridges residential aesthetics with commercial-grade performance, making garages feel like extensions of living spaces.

CHI Sterling offers extensive glass choices to balance light, privacy, and aesthetics. Clear glass provides maximum transparency and allows natural light to pass through. Frosted glass offers privacy while maintaining brightness. Obscure glass features textured patterns that provide privacy while allowing light transmission. Tinted glass reduces heat gain and adds color. Insulated glass features thermal breaks to improve energy efficiency. Bronze, gray, and custom tints available. Additionally, you can specify different glass types in different sections—clear on upper panels for views, frosted on lower panels for privacy. All glass is tempered safety glass that meets residential impact-resistance standards.

CHI Sterling offers 35 powder-coat colors for the aluminum frames—the widest color selection in CHI’s lineup. Options include contemporary neutrals (White, Black, multiple Grays), warm tones (Bronze, Copper, various Browns), cool tones (Silver, Charcoal), bold colors (Red, Blue, Green variations), and architectural specialty colors. Powder coating provides superior durability, corrosion resistance, and color retention compared to paint. CHI can also color-match for custom architectural requirements.

The extensive color palette enables seamless coordination with modern exterior materials such as metal panels, stucco, concrete, wood siding, and stone—critical to contemporary design cohesion.

CHI Sterling prioritizes design and transparency over maximum insulation, but thermal options are available. Non-insulated aluminum frames with single-pane glass provide minimal R-value (~1-2), suitable for detached garages or mild climates. Insulated glass options (double-pane with thermal breaks) improve R-values to approximately 3-5, significantly better than single-pane. Thermal break aluminum frames further enhance energy efficiency by preventing heat/cold transfer through the metal. While Sterling won’t match steel door R-values (6-18), the insulated versions provide adequate performance for most applications. The trade-off is intentional: maximum light and modern aesthetics versus maximum insulation.

Yes, CHI Sterling is engineered for durability in various climates. Aluminum construction naturally resists rust and corrosion—ideal for coastal areas where salt air would damage steel. Powder-coat finish provides additional weather protection and UV resistance. Tempered safety glass withstands impacts and thermal stress. In cold climates, insulated glass and thermal break frames prevent condensation and reduce heat loss. In hot climates, tinted or reflective glass reduces solar heat gain. The commercial-grade aluminum framing system is designed for structural integrity even with large glass panels. Wind load options available for hurricane zones. Sterling delivers modern aesthetics without sacrificing weather performance.

CHI Sterling is positioned in the premium price range due to aluminum construction, large glass panels, and commercial-grade engineering. Expect pricing approximately 50-100% higher than standard steel doors, like Raised Panel or Stamped Carriage House, comparable to or slightly higher than premium Overlay Carriage House with wood overlays. The investment reflects aluminum material costs, extensive glass, precision engineering for large panels, commercial-grade hardware, and premium powder-coat finishing. Sterling is the choice when modern design and natural light are priorities, even with a budget.

For cost-conscious modern aesthetics, consider CHI Skyline Flush or CHI Planks in contemporary colors.
