Common Questions

CHI Planks features contemporary horizontal plank styling that creates clean, modern lines perfect for mid-century modern, contemporary, and transitional architecture. The flush panel design with horizontal plank grooves provides visual interest without traditional raised panels or ornate details. Available in both solid colors (9 options) and Accents Woodtones (7 finishes), Planks bridges modern minimalism with natural warmth. The horizontal emphasis complements modern horizontal siding and creates a sophisticated, architectural appearance.

Planks are part of CHI’s Contemporary Collection, designed for modern homes.

CHI Planks offers extensive color customization with 9 solid factory colors plus 7 Accents Woodtones finishes. Solid colors include modern favorites such as Black, White, and Gray, along with other contemporary tones. Accents Woodtones include Natural Oak, Dark Oak, Cedar, Walnut, Driftwood, Mahogany, and Carbon Oak—each featuring realistic wood grain patterns digitally applied with non-repeating patterns. Additionally, CHI offers custom powder coating in 188 colors and custom color matching for unique architectural requirements. This flexibility enables seamless integration with modern exteriors, whether you prefer monochromatic schemes, bold contrasts, or natural wood aesthetics.

Yes, CHI Planks accommodates various window configurations ideal for modern design. Window options include horizontal rows across the top section, vertically stacked slim windows, offset square windows, and full-section glass panels for maximum light. Glass options include clear for transparency, frosted for privacy with light, obscure for texture, and insulated for energy efficiency. Window frames can be powder-coated to match or contrast with the door color. Modern homes often use Planks with horizontal window rows that echo the plank design, or vertical windows for contemporary asymmetry. The clean plank design showcases windows as intentional design elements.

CHI Planks are available in multiple construction levels, from non-insulated to premium-insulated. Non-insulated (1-layer): Single steel layer, R-0, suitable for detached garages in mild climates. Standard insulated (2-layer): Steel + polystyrene + vinyl backing, R-values around 6.5-10. Premium insulated (2-sided steel): Steel + polyurethane + steel, R-values up to 17.54 for maximum energy efficiency. The 2-sided steel construction with polyurethane provides the best thermal performance, sound dampening, and structural strength—recommended for attached garages, climate-controlled spaces, or areas with temperature extremes. Higher insulation also provides quieter door operation.

Both Planks and Skyline Flush are contemporary collections, but with distinct aesthetics. Planks feature horizontal grooves that create visual texture and dimensional interest—ideal for homeowners seeking modern styling with subtle detailing. Skyline Flush has completely smooth, flat panels without grooves—the most minimalist option for pure geometric simplicity. Planks work well with both contemporary and transitional homes, while the CHI Skyline Flush is best for strictly modern architecture. Both offer similar color and woodtone options, insulation choices, and window configurations. The choice depends on whether you prefer the refined texture of planks or the stark minimalism of flush panels.

CHI Planks uses premium gauge steel depending on construction level. Entry-level non-insulated doors typically use 24- or 25-gauge steel. Standard insulated doors use 25- or 27-gauge steel for the exterior layer. Premium 2-sided insulated construction uses 27-gauge steel for both exterior and interior layers, providing superior dent resistance, structural integrity, and long-term durability. The 27-gauge option is recommended for high-traffic garages, areas prone to hail or impacts, or when maximum door longevity is desired. All steel receives CHI’s factory-applied baked-on polyester paint finish for corrosion resistance and lasting color.
